Swedish description in the Heraldica record SV

The Swedish description in the Heraldica record is shown separately from the editorial text. It has not been verified as an official blazon. The editorial text is based on Ålesund Municipality’s account of the arms.

The boat, cod and three-towered crown

Ålesund Municipality describes the design as a typical 18th-century Sunnmøre boat, a fjæringfar with four pairs of oars. Three cod appear in the waves, and the mural crown above the shield has three towers. The municipality connects the design with fishing and seafaring.

From the 1898 city arms to the current municipality

The arms were approved by royal resolution on 1 April 1898. The new Ålesund municipal council adopted them as the municipality’s arms at its inaugural meeting on 24 October 2019; they came into use when the municipal merger took effect in 2020. The municipality distinguishes the arms from a digital artwork version developed in 2020.
