The man and sword in the arms
Halden Municipality says the present drawing is based on C. M. Munthe’s original design from 1927. The subject is an armoured man standing on a rock with a drawn sword in his hand.

The royal letter of 1665 and the 1927 design
The municipality traces the subject to a royal letter issued when the town received its market-town privileges in 1665. The letter specified an armoured man with a drawn sword standing on a rock. The town council adopted the present design on 13 December 1927; the municipality later returned to Munthe’s original drawing to refine the depiction.
