The knot cross as the arms’ motif

Karmøy Municipality identifies the arms’ motif as a knot cross (knutekors). The municipality describes one stylised figure; this editorial text does not infer a separate blazon from details in the drawing.

The 1974 arms and the municipality’s interpretation

The municipal arms were adopted in 1974, and artist Magnus Hardeland developed the proposal in line with traditional heraldic rules. In its current explanation, the municipality connects the knot cross with Karmøy’s historic importance as a Norwegian transport hub and with present-day community and cooperation. The municipality notes that the original council recommendation did not consider a fuller explanation of the cross necessary, so these meanings are presented as the municipality’s later interpretations.
