The 1988 royal resolution defines Sokndal’s arms as three black pickaxes on gold; SNL gives 1984 as the year of approval.
Swedish description in the Heraldica record SV
The Swedish text in the Heraldica record is kept separate from the definition in the Norwegian regulation. The regulation and SNL give different approval years.
I fält av guld tre svarta korphackor 2 + 1.
The regulation’s definition: three black pickaxes
The Norwegian regulation defines Sokndal’s arms as three black pickaxes on a gold field, arranged 2–1. It describes the flag separately as three black pickaxes on a yellow field.

The 1988 regulation and a source discrepancy
The regulation published by Lovdata was laid down by royal resolution on 8 July 1988 and approves the municipal council’s decision on the arms and flag from 2 May 1988. Store norske leksikon instead gives 1984 as the approval year and interprets the pickaxes as symbols of mining and agriculture. The year and interpretation differ between sources; the regulation itself does not explain the motif.
