Coat of arms of Sør-Varanger
Sør-Varanger Municipality describes its arms as divided diagonally in gold and red by a three-tongued flame line. It interprets the recurring groups of three as references to three peoples, realms, industries and border rivers.

The interpretation of three groups and adoption
The municipality links the arms to three peoples, three realms (Norway, Finland and Russia), three main industries (agriculture, mining and fishing), and three border rivers (Grense Jakobselv, Pasvikelva and Neidenelva). These are the municipality’s own symbolic interpretations. Sissel Sildnes designed the arms; the municipal council adopted them on 26 March 1981, and they were approved by royal resolution on 16 April 1982. The municipality also says the colours refer to the national arms.
