The vine as the subject of the city arms
Stavanger Municipality describes the design as a horizontal, pruned vine with leaves and tendrils. The 1939 decision also established blue and gold as the arms’ colours.
From a seal impression to an established design
The municipality says the motif is first known from a seal impression dated 1591. A vine and an oak stump alternated as the city’s emblem during the 18th and 19th centuries. The idea of fixing the design was raised in 1902, and archivist Hallvard Trætteberg completed its form in the early 1930s, after the motif had been identified as a vine.
