The arms and their description

The Swedish description in the Heraldica record specifies a black beaver with red details on a wavy gold bar in blue. This record wording is kept distinct from an independently verified municipal blazon.

Background in local sources

A digitised 1906 local history held by Umeå University Library connects the name Bjurholm with “beaver islet” and says beavers lived on an islet in the area. This offers a local place-name parallel to the beaver in the arms, but it does not establish why the charge was chosen. The record lists confirmation in 1951 and registration in 1987.
