The arms’ design

The city’s blazon specifies a crenellated silver castle with three crenellated towers, the middle one highest, rising from a blue wavy base on a red field. It also names black windows, doors and gate, as well as a raised silver portcullis.

Background and the source’s interpretation

Jönköping Municipality says the city arms derive from a seal known from the early fifteenth century. The oldest fragmentary document bearing an arms motif is dated 1370. In 1971 the new municipality decided to use the same arms that had been established for the city in 1935.
