The grant of 1663

The city’s graphic manual says the arms in their original form were granted by royal letter dated 5 June 1663. It states that the red backgrounds in two quarters were replaced with silver in 1929; a 1953 opinion from the State Heraldic Board led to the confirmation that remains in force.

Heraldic elements

The heraldic elements are identified using HERO, a heraldry ontology published through Finland's Finto service. It provides structured terminology for describing coats of arms and their components. The list describes the structure of the arms, not the symbolic meaning of its elements.
