The arms and their blazon

The municipality says the oldest surviving seal is attached to a parchment dated 1 August 1300 and already shows the same lion’s face. Its 1946 town blazon specifies red armament.

Background in the municipal sources

The municipality says scholarship has interpreted the seal image as a variation of the Bjälbo dynasty arms. The current Heraldica record instead describes the armament as gold; this difference from the municipal account of the 1946 blazon remains unresolved.

Heraldic elements

The heraldic elements are identified using HERO, a heraldry ontology published through Finland's Finto service. It provides structured terminology for describing coats of arms and their components. The list describes the structure of the arms, not the symbolic meaning of its elements.
