The arms and their blazon
Region Gotland says the municipal arms were registered in 1987 with this blazon. The ram and banner also appeared on the earlier heraldic flag.
Background in the municipal sources
The ram motif is known from the island’s seal in the later thirteenth century. Gotland Municipality was formed in 1971; after the 2011 name change, the arms and current logo are separate marks.
Heraldic elements
The heraldic elements are identified using HERO, a heraldry ontology published through Finland's Finto service. It provides structured terminology for describing coats of arms and their components. The list describes the structure of the arms, not the symbolic meaning of its elements.
